Training and Injury Prevention for Hiking and Backpacking (REI Tucson)

July 12, 2025 @ 11:00 am12:30 pm

The primary risk factors for developing an overuse injury during an endurance activity are “training error” and “history of previous injury.”  Learn how to appropriately train and monitor yourself for injury with a Physical Therapist and Coach.   The presentation will cover the physical aspects of training:  how to pace yourself, how much time is needed to probably prepare for a big hike or trip, and how to progressively add more challenge to your training.  We’ll also go over common wearables (devices that monitor heart rate and other variables) and software you can use to track your training and effort level.  The presentation will also cover how to monitor yourself for early signs of developing injury.  This will include a discussion of common injuries, signs and symptoms you may notice, and how to adjust your training and perform self-care techniques at home.  You’ll take home knowledge and practical tips to help you stay healthy as you explore the outdoors.
